Tommy Li's PhD Thesis "Spin-orbit coupling and topological phase transitions in semiconductor heterostructures" contains a wealth of highly original results and merits the award of the PhD degree. Well done, Tommy!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
All the best to everyone, health, success, love and peace, music and travel, smiles and fine food, interesting books and fireworks.

Congratulation to Tommy Li
Congratulation to Tommy Li - his paper on Chern insulating state has just appeared in Physical Review B : Li, Tommy and Sushkov, Oleg P. (2016) Chern insulating state in laterally patterned semiconductor heterostructures. Phys. Rev. B 94, 155311.
New ARC Centre of Excellence for Science
Excellent news and a great win for the School of Physics at UNSW: the academics and PhD students from the School of Physics will be involved in the new ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies. The Centre will be led by Professor Michael Fuhrer and will be established at the Monash University.
The Centre aims to develop the scientific foundation for new electronics technologies. Decreasing energy use is a major societal challenge. The Centre aims to meet that challenge by realising fundamentally new types of electronic conduction without resistance in solid-state systems at room temperature. Novel resistance-free electronic phenomena at room temperature are expected to form the basis of integrated electronics technology with ultra-low energy consumption.
For more information - see Media release issued by the ARC on 8th of September 2016.
Congratulations to Yaroslav Kharkov
Congratulations to Yaroslav Kharkov on publishing "The amplitudes and the structure of the charge density wave in YBCO" in Scientific Reports, 6, 34551 (2016). We are happy to share a full-text version of our paper by using the link.
The Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting Wagga Wagga 2017

Gordon Godfrey Workshop on Spins and Strong Electron Correlations 2015
Gordon Godfrey Workshop on Spins and Strong Electron Correlations 2015 has been very successful and well attended.
Important aspect of the workshop was the opportunity for the participants to exchange interesting ideas. Young PhD students and researchers got acquainted with each other not only through hot discussions in the conference room but also through chatting. Special one day, Friday, was dedicated for discussions.
