Research projects for Honours Degree students, School of Physics, UNSW (2025)

Oleg Sushkov has interest and expertise in the following topics for Higher Degree Research (HDR) students: Strong electron correlations; Spintronics; Quantum phase transitions; Detection of cosmic axions; Nuclear physics. He proposes the following Honours research projects:

1) A new method of axion-like dark matter detection.

The aim of the project is to develop the theory for a novel promising method of dark matter detection. The method is based on optic fibers. To some extent the idea of the method is similar to the LIGO detection of gravitational waves.

2) Excitons in Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers in strong electric and magnetic fields.

TMD excitons are similar to two-dimensional  hydrogen atoms. This is a very hot topic of research  because of possible applications.  There are recent intriguing experimental results on behaviour of excitons in strong electric fields.   The aim of the project is to develop the theory of TMD excitons in strong fields.

Research group meetings

The Condensed Matter Theory group meets in the School of Physics on Tuesdays at 11:00 am and on Thursdays at 11:00 am. Members of other research groups in the School welcome to participate.
