The new research projects are proposed for Honours degree students at the School of Physics, UNSW in 2025. The title of the first research project is “A new method of axion-like dark matter detection”. The aim of the project is to develop the theory for a novel promising method of dark matter detection. The method is based on optic fibers. To some extent the idea of the method is similar to the LIGO detection of gravitational waves.
The title of the second research project is "Excitons in Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers in strong electric and magnetic fields." TMD excitons are similar to two-dimensional hydrogen atoms. This is a very hot topic of research because of possible applications. There are recent intriguing experimental results on behaviour of excitons in strong electric fields. The aim of the project is to develop the theory of TMD excitons in strong fields.
